Peppers Silo Launceston

Located in the heart of Launceston in Tasmania, and situated on the banks of the River Tamar is the Peppers Silo Launceston. This iconic hotel was once used to store grain in its silos for commercial purposes. It was then conserved and redeveloped to the hotel it is today.

The hotel is located well within walking distance of the city centre, and also boasts views of Royal Park and Cataract Gorge across the river basin.

After parking our car at the large onsite parking facility, we proceeded to check in. We admired how the modern facade of the building could somehow complement the iconic silos that were retained on the other side of the building.

Upon entering the lobby, we were immediately attended to. The property actually has a resident canine, and his name is Archie. We got carried away playing with Archie without realising that our room keys were ready.

The check-in staff also handed us a couple of welcome drink vouchers. Just for fun, we asked Archie where the drinks were, and he led us all the way to the bar! Archie has a comfortable bed in the lobby area so guests will probably find him there most times of the day. In fact, at certain time slots, guests may bring Archie out for a stroll.

Before long, we were up in our room. For this stay, we made it a point to book the room located in the silo itself. This room has a semi circular layout, with the king sized bed set against the straight length of the wall, which is actually the diameter of one of the silos.

At the corner of the room was a comfortable day bed overlooking the River Tamar basin and the surrounding parks.

At the front of the room was the curved semi circular wall, which featured a work desk and a flat screen television. The gap between the ottoman at the foot of the bed and the work desk was actually more than a couple of meters, so this room was actually very spacious.

The bathroom was a standard one, with a standing shower and WC, with no bathtub.

Just outside the bathroom was the wardrobe and standard amenities such as coffee and tea, and the water kettle. There were also some snacks like chips and little bottles of liquor.

With respect to the common areas, we visited the gym, which boasts quite a remarkable range of cardio and cable equipment.

The in-house restaurant, Grain of the Silos Cafe, serves up meals throughout the day. On one of the nights we decided to try their dinner menu and we were impressed. The abalone, otherwise known as paua, was prepared to perfection! As were the pork and pasta dishes we ordered. The souffle was a great way to round up our dinner too!

The hotel staff recommended we take a short walk to Cataract Gorge Reserve. Along the way, be mesmerised by amazing views of the South Esk River as you cross the iconic suspension bridge along the way. We were blessed with great weather during our sunset stroll and arrived back at the hotel after dusk.

The Peppers Silo Launceston is definitely our property of choice when we visit Launceston again. Archie has a big part to play of course, but then again, who wouldn’t want to stay in one of those grain silos? Plus the property is conveniently located within walking distance of key landmarks such as Cataract Gorge and the city centre itself.
