Located at 571 George Street in the city of Dunedin is the small but charming property Bluestone on George. Dunedin is a city along the east coast of South Island in New Zealand, which has a large student population, and is also home to the world’s steepest residential street.
There aren’t many large scale properties in Dunedin, so when I chanced upon this property online, I didn’t hesitate to book my stay with them.
From the outside, this property looked just like any other house, but as you’d see, I was extremely impressed by its interiors. There was ample onsite parking, good news for those who self-drive.
Entering the property through a set of sliding doors, I was greeted by the staff at the reception. He mentioned that my room was almost ready, and ushered me to the lounge area to wait. At the same time, he offered to orientate me to the key sights in Dunedin, and handed me a map with nearby F&B outlets all marked out.
The lounge area was huge, with sofas, reading material, and a computer for guests to use.
There was also a glass chess set to pass time if need be.
It was only a 15-minute wait before the receptionist handed me my keys to my room. As I never travel light, I was glad that the seemingly small property had a lift that serviced all floors, so I had no issues with my bags.
The room was quite large, with lots of windows that could be opened to let in the breeze. The bed was very comfortable, and there were more than enough pillows to go around.
On the far side of the room was a living area with a sofa and an ottoman. I found it great to simply lounge in while watching television.
I could access the outdoor porch from my room, but there wasn’t much of a view so I spent most of my time indoors.
At the front of the room was a desk with two chairs, great for additional seating in the event you have to host some guests.
The bathroom was fairly large and had a shower-cum-bathtub.
Right by the front door was a kitchenette area with a wash basin, microwave oven, and a full set of glassware and utensils.
For those who don’t like to live out of a suitcase when travelling, you’ll find the wardrobe large enough for a standard suitcase with sufficient hangers for your clothing.
Out in the yard which is accessible by all guests were some outdoor furniture that seemed to be under utilised.
There was a small fitness room located within the property, that had a couple of cardio machines and some free weights.Overall, Bluestone on George far surpassed my expectations. Given that this wasn’t the usual international chain that I’d often pick, I didn’t have high hopes. However, the warm reception that I received upon arrival and hospitality during my entire stay, coupled with the great upkeep of the entire property, gave me a newfound respect for smaller, self-run establishments. For those thinking of visiting Dunedin, I think you’ll enjoy your stay at the Bluestone on George.
