I just got a pair of free* Business Class tickets on Singapore Airlines from Guangzhou to Singapore

Milelion wrote recently about how to save tons of miles by using KrisFlyer’s stopover feature. Essentially, if you are travelling on an SQ award flight from London to Singapore in Business Class, you will require 85000 miles. Let’s say you then intend to travel to Sydney for another holiday, you will require 58000 miles one way in Business Class. If booked separately, these 2 sectors will require 143000 miles. However, if you wish to use the stopover feature, you will only have to top up 20000 miles on top of the original 85000 miles spent from London to Singapore, which is a saving of 38000 miles. Now that’s an amazing deal!

So back to my situation. My partner and I have planned a trip to Christchurch (CHC) in December this year, which requires 58000 miles per person per sector. With the stopover feature, I was thinking of adding a short trip prior to our sector to CHC. Looking at the SQ award chart, any destination in Zones 1-4 will not require any additional top up of miles. Hence, we decided on Guangzhou (CAN), a destination we have yet to visit. I proceeded to add the sector CAN-SIN to our original SIN-CHC sector with a top up of ZERO miles (*stopover fee applicable), a saving of 27500 miles per person per sector! In other words, both SIN-CHC or CAN-SIN-CHC actually cost the same 58000 miles. This is what our new routing looks like now.

And as for our return CHC-SIN sector, we have yet to decide where to go next.

So there you go, make use of the KrisFlyer stopover feature to save loads of miles!
