Most mobile payments utilise Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, whose terminals accept payments of up to S$100 only. Do take note, however, that some NFC terminals have been known to accept payments of above S$100, but this remains an exception to the norm.

In contrast, Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology allows for transactions of any value, subject to the cardholder’s credit limit. So what exactly is MST? MST is a technology that emits a magnetic signal that mimics the magnetic strip on a traditional payment card. The signal from your smartphone to the payment terminal emulates the swiping of a physical card, and is accepted at nearly all payment terminals with a card reader.

Given that only Samsung Pay utilises both NFC and MST technologies, the cap of S$100 that is applied to NFC transactions does not apply when you use MST to make payments in excess of S$100. Hence, adding the OCBC Titanium Rewards Card to your Samsung Pay-enabled smartphone will allow you to earn 4 mpd when you use MST for purchases in excess of S$100. Remember, however, that you can only earn 4 mpd from eligible transactions up to a cap of S$12000 per card anniversary.

Many Samsung smartphones currently allow for the use of Samsung Pay, but the most affordable device that uses both NFC and MST is the J7 Pro.
