Singapore Airlines has signed an agreement to codeshare on flights operated by Alaska Airlines, which will come into effect on 27 Sep 2017, subject to regulatory approval. Singapore Airlines will add the ‘SQ’ designator code to Alaska Airlines flights on routes serving 18 destinations, including, but not limited to Anchorage, Boise, Mexico City, Minneapolis, Orange County, San Jose, and Seattle.
Under the same agreement, KrisFlyer and Alaska Airlines’s Mileage Plan members will be able to earn and redeem miles when travelling on either carrier from 27 Sep 2017.
So, if you’re a KrisFlyer and Mileage Plan member, here’s what you could possibly earn and redeem following the agreement between the two carriers.
Earning Miles
As you can see from the table above, you stand to accrue up to 225% and 350% of miles on Mileage Plus for Business and First travel respectively, if you travel on Singapore Airlines and credit them to your Mileage Plus account. This is a superior earn rate when compared to KrisFlyer, which allows up to 125% and 300% on Business and First respectively. There is, however, no significant difference for travel on Premium Economy or Economy when it comes to accrual of miles.
Redeeming Miles
You will stand a much better chance at redeeming your Mileage Plan miles for top tier premium cabins with some of the following carriers instead of Singapore Airlines. For example, a one-way trip from Asia to Continental US on Cathay Pacific will only cost you 50000 and 70000 miles for Business and First respectively. Given that Singapore Airlines guards its long-haul premium cabins from non-KrisFlyer redemptions, you will get more value with your Mileage Plan miles if you redeem with these other carriers instead.
